A Nigerian soccer player died Saturday after suffering an apparent heart attack during a game.

David Oniya collapsed on the field in Kota Bharu, Malaysia, during a friendly between his side, T-Team, and another Malaysia Premier League team, Kelantan.

An ambulance was rushed on the pitch for the team’s 30-year-old captain — but not fast enough, according to T-Team’s CEO.

“He suffered a heart attack, but it could have been a different story had the ambulance driver [been] alert,” Syahrizan Mohd Zain told the New Straits Times. “The driver was at the stands watching the game when Oniya suddenly collapsed, and our defender was deprived of oxygen for several minutes.”

The match was called off in the 60th minute after word spread that Oniya was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Oniya had played soccer professionally for more than 10 years, including stints in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
